Northwest Hospital’s Emergency Department Modernization Project

Improvements for patients, providers and emergency medical services teams

The Future of Emergency Care

Northwest Hospital has the busiest emergency departments (ED) in Baltimore County. Some 45,000 patients are treated in the Northwest ED each year. To better serve our community, the hospital launched a $6 million project in the spring to renovate, modernize and expand the space. The plans include a new emergency department entrance, waiting areas and triage spaces. The modernization and renovation will improve the experience in the ED for both patients and caregivers.

Improvements

Over the upcoming months the improvements will include:

  • A new patient-centric design with a more efficient flow to improve initiatives already underway to reduce wait times.
  • New security post positioned to improve visibility and security
  • A waiting area with special features for behavioral health patients
  • The new design in the ED will allow EMS providers to bring acutely ill patients directly into a triage room for immediate care

Project Description and Timeline

  • Timeline:  Project completion is scheduled for summer 2025.
  • Square Footage:  The ED modernization will span 7,500 square feet. 5,000 square feet of existing space will be renovated, and a 2,500 square foot addition will be constructed.
  • Location:  The entrance to the emergency department at Northwest Hospital is located off Old Court Road.
