Joseph Wiley, M.D., chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital at Sinai

Baltimore, Md. - Joseph Wiley, M.D., chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital at Sinai has been awarded the Pediatrician of the Year by the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was chosen for the academy's highest honor because he exemplified the ideals of pediatrics through outstanding contributions to child health and professional pediatrics in Maryland.

"We are proud of Dr. Wiley's accomplishments and his leadership in the pediatrics community," said Amy Perry, president of Sinai Hospital. "He has helped to truly define patient- and family-centered care in the new Samuelson Children's Hospital."

Wiley has been a respected member of the pediatrics community for the past 31 years. He joined Sinai Hospital in 2000 as the division chief of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and became chairman of the Department of Pediatrics in 2001. He has served as program director and assistant program director for the residency training program at Sinai Hospital. He is a member of numerous hospital committees and is also a member of many national and international pediatric societies. He has been active in clinical research in pediatric hematology-oncology with more than 50 publications and an equal number of abstracts. He is best known for his work in supportive care and infections in cancer patients, particularly fungal infections.

Over the last seven years, Wiley headed the fundraising activities as well as the design processes that led to the construction of a state-of-the-art pediatric inpatient unit, which opened its doors in March 2012. This facility helped to support the new era of patient- and family-centered facilities that put the patient at the center of the inpatient experience. Wiley continues to actively engage in clinical care, teaching residents and students, and mentoring emerging leaders in the LifeBridge Health system.

He received the award on October 5 during the annual awards ceremony.
