Sinai Hospital Celebrates 150th Anniversary

News

Baltimore, MD - The summer of 2016 marks a significant milestone for Sinai Hospital of Baltimore - the 150th anniversary of when the cornerstone was laid for the 10-room Baltimore Asylum for Israelites at Monument and Ann Streets in downtown Baltimore, which later became Sinai Hospital. Started just one year after the end of the Civil War, the hospital's growth and evolution parallels the history of the nation and Baltimore City, also revealing insights into advances in medicine, technology and patient care.

Today Sinai Hospital is a modern 520-bed medical complex in North Baltimore with a mission to maintain and improve the health of people in our community by providing quality medical services in a caring environment.

To celebrate this important 150th anniversary, Sinai Hospital plans a series of events and commemorations. We encourage our community to celebrate with us, including sharing stories of how Sinai Hospital has played a role in their lives.

Here is a glimpse at what will be happening:

Community/ Playground Project

Throughout its history, Sinai Hospital has been focused on our community and giving back. In October, Sinai Hospital employees will be coming together to build a playground in Park Heights, our neighbor since 1959 when the current North Baltimore campus opened its doors.

Sinai Stories

Online: A special Sinai 150th website (sinai150.com) features a video timeline and a recently discovered vintage newsreel, as well as historic photos. We also encourage people to tell us their Sinai stories.

We know that there are families whose parents, grandparents and possibly great grandparents and beyond were all born at Sinai. We have already heard of one married couple who later realized that they were in the Sinai nursery at the same time when they were born. There are Sinai employees who have spent their entire careers here, working at the hospital for more than four decades. We want to both hear and share these stories.

On the anniversary website, we encourage employees, family, friends, neighbors and other members of our community to share their Sinai stories and photographs with us. People email to them sinai150@lifebridgehealth.org or fill out a form on sinai150.com.

We will then share these for everyone to see, creating a new community of memories.

Social Media: Leading up to the anniversary, LifeBridge Health (Sinai Hospital's parent company) is sharing historic photographs on social media and encouraged employees, patients and community members to tell us their Sinai stories through the sinai150.com website. Throughout 2016, we will continue to share these archival photos as well highlight some of these Sinai stories on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels.

Medical Symposium

As a teaching hospital, medical education is a vital part of Sinai's mission. Plans are underway for a medical symposium this fall, bringing together medical experts, students and members of the community for a discussion of current medical topics and the future of medicine.

Historical Timeline/Mini-museum

There will also be a permanent remembrance of the 150th anniversary. A timeline of events in Sinai Hospital's history will be installed in the front ha
