Sinai Hospital of Baltimore Receives Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award

News

Baltimore, MD - Sinai Hospital of Baltimore has earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. This designation signifies that Sinai is dedicated to treating stroke patients using the most up-to-date scientific research-based evidence.

Sinai received this recognition with the objectives of reducing the time it takes stroke patients to recuperate and by reducing the rates of disabilities and death during a pre-determined amount of time.

Among the criteria used were quality measures that had to be met to diagnose, assess, treat and keep in contact with stroke patients after they leave Sinai. Teaching individuals about taking care of themselves, scheduling a follow-up appointment and letting them know about other available care transition interventions were crucial guidelines as well.

Sinai was also awarded the association's Target: StrokeSM Elite Plus Quality Achievement Award. This acknowledgement is given to hospitals that meet quality measures created to reduce the time between a patient's arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

"The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association is pleased to recognize Sinai Hospital of Baltimore for its commitment to treating stroke patients and improving their outcomes," says Eric E. Smith, M.D., national chairman of the national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and an associated professor of neurology at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. "Research demonstrations that hospitals which follow the clinical measures of the Get With The Guidelines quality improvement initiative can often to see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates."

Someone in the United States suffers a stroke every 40 seconds on average. Stroke is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States according to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
