Northwest Hospital Receives Top Prize in 2025 Minogue Award for Patient Safety Innovation
Hospital Bested 50 Other Healthcare Organization Submissions

Randallstown, MD – The Maryland Patient Safety Center has awarded Northwest Hospital its highest honor: the prestigious 2025 Minogue Award for Patient Safety Innovation.
Northwest Hospital’s project, “Gearing Up for Greatness—Using Continuous Improvement and HRO Principles to Create a High-Performing Nursing Unit,” topped 50 submissions from other healthcare organizations in the state.
The Minogue Award judging panel is made up of a group of independent healthcare professionals who evaluated the applications through a blinded process (with the names of the hospitals removed). Entries were judged solely on the merits of the patient safety innovation.
Northwest Hospital’s innovative project utilized a five-point process to decrease falls and hospital stays as well as increase patient satisfaction and staff engagement in the fiscal year 2024. The Randallstown hospital saw significant results from implementing the program including a reduction in patient length of stay, a 31% reduction in total falls, the elimination of central line-associated bloodstream infections and catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and improved patient satisfaction scores.
“Winning the Minogue Award for our ‘Gearing Up for Greatness’ initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to the patient, our team and our journey to become a high-reliability organization with zero patient harm,” says Northwest Hospital President Craig Carmichael. “With an energized, multidisciplinary team focused on the patient, we will continue to CARE BRAVELY, driving innovation and setting new expectations to deliver the highest quality of patient care and staff engagement."
Northwest Hospital will be honored at an award ceremony April 9, the night before the Maryland Patient Safety Center’s Conference on April 10.
