GW Medical Students Begin First Day of Classes at New Regional Medical Campus in Baltimore
Baltimore, MD – April 25, 2023 – On April 17, the inaugural class of medical students in a new Regional Medical Campus (RMC), based at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, started their first day of school with a welcome ceremony, celebrating the partnership between the George Washington (GW) University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and LifeBridge Health. The new campus will provide GW third- and fourth- year medical students the opportunity to train in a community-focused health system with strong emphasis on primary and continuity care in a population health environment.
Eleven third-year medical students received white coats and backpacks as they began the first day of classes at the newly established RMC. Dr. Ray Lucas, interim senior associate dean for the GW Regional Medical Campus and professor of Emergency Medicine, School of Medicine and Health Sciences at George Washington University; Neil Meltzer, president & CEO at LifeBridge Health, and Dr. Matthew Poffenroth, president of LifeBridge Health Medical Group and senior vice president and chief physician executive at LifeBridge Health, all spoke at the ceremony.
After the morning event, the students got right to work with lectures that day. Throughout the course of their studies, the students will be working in Sinai’s new simulation lab and rotating for clinical studies in units throughout the hospital, as well as seeking out learning opportunities in the community.
According to the American Association of Medical Colleges, a Regional Medical Campus is a distinct and separate location from the central campus of a medical school where students spend one or more years of their training. This new campus will eventually enable a cohort of up to 30 third-year and 30 fourth-year GW medical students who complete the first two years of didactic classroom education in Washington, D.C., at GW’s Foggy Bottom campus. The RMC is one of many initiatives intended to increase the pipeline for training medical professionals.
