Carroll Hospital Foundation awards nearly $15,000 in scholarships to local students
When Danielle Hadley-Burkhead learned she would receive a scholarship to help pay her tuition and expenses at Carroll Community College, she was ecstatic. As a second career nursing student with a husband and five children"”two of whom are getting ready to go to college soon"”Hadley-Burkhead says money and tuition are a big deal in her household.
"Being able to have this amazing gift to help afford my tuition makes it easier," says Hadley-Burkhead. "It's a big juggling act trying to make sure that I can afford to go to school at the same time as [the] next generation in my home is as well."
Hadley-Burkhead was one of five local students to be awarded scholarships by the Carroll Hospital Foundation to assist her and others in advancing their education. The Foundation awarded nearly $15,000 to students during special presentations on July 14 and July 15 at the hospital.
Below is a listing of the scholarships and recipients.
The Libman Nursing Scholarship was awarded to Danielle Hadley-Burkhead, of Union Bridge, and Alyssa Tissue, of Westminster. They each received $2,000 to cover tuition, books and fees for their pursuit of a degree as a registered nurse. The scholarship was established in 2004 by Frank Herbert Libman and is awarded each year to Carroll County residents pursuing a nursing degree at Carroll Community College.
As an employee of Carroll Hospital, Tissue also received an additional $2,000 as the recipient of the Harold Glenn and Audrey G. Benson Trumpower Employee Education Fund established in 2019 through the generosity of The Harold Glenn and Audrey G. Benson Trumpower Foundation. The Trumpower Foundation aimed to help the hospital recruit and retain the best employees to serve the community by providing support for college, ongoing educational training as well as help attaining and renewing professional certifications. It is the second largest education/scholarship fund supporting Carroll Hospital associates.
The Scholarship for Dependents of Associates was awarded to Kristina Kemp, of Westminster. Kemp is the daughter of Charlotte Kemp, who works as a laboratory medical technologist at Carroll Hospital. Kristina received $2,000 toward her studies at Kent State University in the fall. The scholarship was created in July 2006 by Dr. Michael Kane and his wife Debbie and was set up to help retain a top-notch staff at Carroll Hospital to work with patients, physicians and family members.
The Harold Glenn and Audrey G. Benson Trumpower Employee Education Fund as well as the Carroll Hospital Associate Scholarship established by Physicians of Indian Origin, was awarded to Sweta Kantesaria, of Manchester. Kantesaria, an associate at Carroll Hospital in the Emergency Department received a check in the amount of $3,000 toward her studies at Carroll Community College, $2,000 from the Trumpower Employee Education Fund and $1,000 from the Physicians of Indian Origin Fund. Launched in 2008, this scholarship was originally established by Dr. Natvarlal Rajpara and jointly funded by Drs. Anusha Belani, Binu Chacko, Prafull Dave, Noel Gressieux, Dineshkumar Kalaria, Kiran and Radhika Kuna, Elizabeth Pallan, Suresh and Sushma Sidh, Rupal Udeshi, Surender Vaswani and Nayan Vaywala.
And, the Virginia Minnick Auxiliary Scholarship for dependents of associates was awarded to Sydney Blacksten, of Westminster. Sydney received $2,500 toward her studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The scholarship was started in 2010 by longtime Carroll Hospital Auxiliary member, Ms. Virginia Shipley Minnick, who allocated $50,000 from her estate to establish the scholarship.
