Carroll Hospital to Break Ground on Emergency Department Renovation

Redesigned Space Aims to Decrease Wait Times, Address Changing Needs of the Community and Improve Experience for Patients and Care Providers

What: Carroll Hospital will break ground on a renovation and modernization project for its emergency department (ED)—an initiative that will transform emergency services and improve the experience for patients, visitors and care providers.

Teams in Carroll Hospital’s emergency department treat approximately 47,000 patients each year (about 130 people each day), a number that has been increasing over the years. Additionally, emergency department patients now often need treatment for more complex medical issues. The existing layout is outdated and does not meet current needs, with the last major renovation taking place in 2003.

This vital project will reconfigure the current emergency department to better suit the needs of today. The modernization will add triage areas, including a dedicated and more efficient space for ambulance offloading; redesigns the registration area and waiting room for better patient flow; encloses the drive-thru canopy to create a more secure behavioral health space; and adds a large capacity trauma room. Guided by priorities around safety, privacy and patient satisfaction, the reconfigured space will also create a more efficient patient flow with distinct pathways for patients who are being treated and discharged, patients needing further evaluation and those who need to be admitted the hospital.

The initiative aims to reduce wait times and enhance patient comfort and privacy, as well as improve efficiency for care teams.

The $9.5 million renovation will take about two years to complete. The emergency department will, of course, remain open and operational through the renovation.

Why: Like most hospitals in the state and the country, Carroll Hospital continues to see an increased demand for emergency medical services. The 168-bed hospital is a vital community resource and the only hospital in Carroll County.

The ED event also will take place on the tenth anniversary of the day Carroll Hospital joined the LifeBridge Health system. Team members will be celebrating with cake later in the day.
