2017 Annual Outcome Report - LifeBridge Health's Second Annual Mammothon
Eighty-four women in Northern Baltimore were screened and are up to date with their yearly mammograms. These women were participants in the Second Annual Mammothon Screening event which took place on November 16, 2017. The Mammothon is an annual all-day breast screening event which provides extended hours at multiple locations in an effort to reduce obstacles to regular screening that many women face. The Mammothon is a breast cancer screening event dedicated in to providing early detection for the community. Those participating in the Mammothon screening event were provided light refreshments and a gift bag from LifeBridge Health.
As one of the largest comprehensive and most highly respected providers of health-related services for the communities of Northwest Baltimore, LifeBridge Health advocates preventative services, wellness, fitness services and educational programs. LifeBridge Health consists of three acute-care general hospitals with complimentary clinical centers of excellence, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Northwest Hospital of Randallstown and Carroll Hospital of Westminster.
LifeBridge Health is accredited by the American College of Surgeons which ensures that the cancer program meets the highest national standards for comprehensive and patient-centered care. In 2017, Sinai, Northwest and Carroll joined together to develop LifeBridge Health Integrated Network Cancer Program. As an Integrated Network Cancer Program (INCP), LifeBridge is dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients by offering multidisciplinary quality of care and cancer-related education and support services close to home.
Breast cancer is one of the top five cancer sites diagnosed at Sinai, Northwest and Carroll Hospitals. An early cancer diagnosis can lead to more effective treatment along with higher survival rates. Since women are often too busy to find time for a mammogram, they will sometimes skip their annual screening. To help make the screening convenient, LifeBridge Health partnered with Advanced Radiology and Community Radiology to offer extended morning and evening mammogram appointments at six locations throughout the Northern Baltimore area (Baltimore and Carroll counties). Further, referrals were required at only one location, The Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center at Northwest. All other Mammogram screening locations did not require a referral.
The Mammothon event was planned to occur in the fall in order to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and was advertised throughout Baltimore and Carroll counties by direct mail, digital, print and radio. It was determined that direct mail was most effective in reaching participants. LifeBridge Health will continue to advertise by direct mail in 2018 in an effort to attract new, as well as returning participants.
There was a good turnout this year with 84 women attending the screening event. Twenty-five women were screened at the two Carroll County locations including Advanced Radiology in Eldersburg and at the Fisher Medical Building in Westminster, 24 women screened at two Baltimore locations including Owings Mills and Pomona Square, 32 women participated at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, and 3 women were screened at Community Radiology in Mt Airy. Of the 84 women who were screened, additional imaging was recommended for 16 women. All the women who were recommended for follow-up imaging have become LifeBridge Health navigation patients and are monitored to ensure compliance with recommendations and understanding what resources are available.
