Northwest Hospital’s PGY1 Residency program was established in 2023 with our first resident to complete the program in 2024. Our program meets ASHP Accreditation Standards for Postgraduate Residency Programs and is designed to build upon the foundation created in Pharmacy School.
Our 12-month residency program offers a well-rounded training experience where residents will enhance their competency in managing medication-use systems and providing optimal pharmaceutical care in various patient care settings.
The goal of the residency program is to create independent practitioners prepared to assume an advanced clinical practice position or pursue a PGY2 in a focused area of interest. Residents work toward this goal through the following set of skill developments:
- Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to improve patient outcomes and optimize medication safety
- Ensure expertise by providing evidence-based patient-centered recommendations
- Advance written and oral communication skills
- Integrate therapeutic knowledge with an understanding of the health care system through the development of drug related policies and procedures
- Cultivate leadership in the pharmacy profession through the development of project management skills and knowledge about the clinical and technological aspects of pharmacy practice
- Promote professional development through continued education and self-evaluation
Program Purpose
Residents will build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
