Part of the Herman & Walter Samuelson Children’s Center at Sinai Hospital, the Alfred I. Coplan Pediatric Hematology Oncology Outpatient Center and Shirley Howard Pediatric Oncology Inpatient Unit serve as havens of compassionate, kid-friendly care for patients and their families.

A Space Made for Families

Designed with the comfort of kids in mind, our environment features an undersea theme, complete with a live feed of the National Aquarium, inspiring a sense of both wonder and safety greatly beneficial to the overall care of pediatric patients. Our play area is fully stocked with books, toys and games for children and adolescents of every age, and our unit includes designated spaces for parents to work and relax.

The Alfred I. Coplan Pediatric Hematology Oncology Outpatient Center offers exam and infusion facilities oriented around the unique needs of children and designed to make families feel fully supported. The center’s features include:

Five large, patient-centric exam rooms

An on-site pediatric lab for blood counts, bone marrow aspirates and spinal fluid exams

Technology that supports the electronic health record

Five private infusion bays, monitored in a unique open nursing station configuration

Improved access to patient charts in a comforting, bright, child- and adolescent-friendly environment

A private family conference room located next to the clinic

Social worker offices for learning resources and private family meetings

The Shirley Howard Pediatric Oncology Inpatient Unit includes spacious single-patient rooms with full bathrooms, large enough to comfortably accommodate the family. Each room’s entertainment center comes equipped with on-demand movies and shows, as well as a PlayStation 4, allowing patients to relax, game and watch their favorite content when not receiving treatment.

Conditions we treat

We treat a broad range of blood cancers and solid tumors, as well as disorders of the white blood cells, platelets and red blood cells, including sickle cell disease and thalassemias. We also treat bleeding and clotting disorders.

Multidisciplinary Care Teams

Our patients not only receive treatment from some of the field’s finest oncology and hematology experts, but also benefit from the specialized services of a social worker, art therapist, music therapist and neuropsychologist, to ensure a comprehensive treatment plan accounting for the whole child and their family.
