The Residency Application Process

We welcome your interest in Sinai’s general surgery residency. We emphasize solid academic performance, strong work ethic, versatile interests and friendly personalities.

Applications for the surgical residency program at Sinai Hospital are accepted via ERAS. Submissions may begin when ERAS opens. Interviews are offered on a rolling basis so early applications are appreciated. Both Step 1 and Step 2 or Level 1 and Level 2 scores are required to apply to our program.

Our program is dedicated to fostering an exceptional environment for developing future surgeons. We value collaboration, communication, growth mindset, humility, humor, integrity, and honesty. By prioritizing collaboration and communication, the program ensures effective teamwork and clear exchange of ideas, essential for patient care and surgical success. Emphasizing a growth mindset encourages residents to continually learn and improve, while humility keeps them grounded in their pursuit of excellence. Humor helps maintain resilience and camaraderie amidst the challenges of residency. Integrity and honesty are core to building trust and upholding the highest standards in both patient interactions and professional conduct. Together, these values define the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore Surgery Residency Program and create a supportive environment for residents to thrive and excel in their surgical careers. Individuals that share these values will flourish in our program.

Applicants may be asked to complete the SurgWise Situational Judgement Test. Interviews will not be extended without completion of this request. If you are offered an interview, you will be notified via Thalamus Scheduling by Stephanie Chairs, residency administrator. For the intern class of 2025-2026, the interview dates are as follows:

  • Tuesday, November 12 IN-PERSON ONLY
  • Tuesday, November 19 VIRTUAL ONLY
  • Tuesday, December 3 IN-PERSON ONLY
  • Tuesday, December 10 VIRTUAL ONLY
  • Tuesday, December 17 IN-PERSON ONLY
  • Tuesday, January 7 IN-PERSON ONLY

We interview approximately 10 candidates on each date and slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We will be accepting up to four categorical residents to our intern class. We do not have preliminary positions.

Pre-Interview Social

If you are offered an interview, you will be invited to a pre-interview social the night before your scheduled interview date. If you choose a virtual interview date, this event will be held on Zoom. If you choose an in-person interview date, this event will be held locally in Baltimore. These events will allow candidates to meet the current residents in our program in a relaxed environment.

The Interview Day

This year’s interviews will be held either in-person or virtually. For virtual interviews, please ensure you have a laptop or desktop computer with a solid internet connection. Regardless of the interview day format, each candidate meets with our Program Director, Associate Program Director, and Department Chair and Director in addition to three core faculty or residents. The interview day is expected to last 6.5 hours on in-person days and 4.5 hours on virtual days. There will be at least one break built into your schedule.

There will be an opportunity for in-person second-look visits at the conclusion of our interview season. We look forward to meeting you! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.
