Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that lie just under the skin and are commonly found in the legs. They occur when the valves in the veins that regulate blood flow become weak or damaged, causing blood to pool and veins to enlarge. This condition can cause discomfort and lead to more serious health problems if left untreated.

Risk Factors

Several factors can increase the risk of developing varicose veins, including:

  • Age: The risk increases with age as veins lose elasticity.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop varicose veins due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation and menopause.
  • Family History: A family history of varicose veins can increase the likelihood of developing them.
  • Obesity: Excess weight puts additional pressure on veins.
  • Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Jobs or activities that require long periods of standing or sitting can contribute to varicose veins.
  • Pregnancy: Increased blood volume during pregnancy can enlarge veins.

Symptoms

Varicose veins may cause various symptoms, including:

  • Visible Veins: Dark purple or blue veins that are twisted and bulging, often resembling cords on the legs.
  • Pain and Discomfort: Aching, burning, throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in the lower legs.
  • Itching: Around one or more of the veins.
  • Skin Changes: Discoloration, hardening of the vein, inflammation or skin ulcers near the ankle, indicating a more severe form of vascular disease.

Diagnostics and Tests

Diagnosing varicose veins typically involves a physical examination and may include:

  • Ultrasound: To check blood flow and the structure of the veins, identifying any valve issues or blood clots.
  • Venogram: In some cases, a special X-ray test can provide additional detail by using a dye to show how blood flows through the veins.

Treatments and Services

Treatment for varicose veins aims to relieve symptoms, improve appearance and prevent complications. At LifeBridge Health, we provide a comprehensive range of treatments and services that allow for personalized care:

  • Lifestyle Changes: Exercise, weight loss, elevating the legs and avoiding prolonged standing or sitting.
  • Compression Stockings: Special stockings that squeeze the legs, helping veins and leg muscles move blood more efficiently.
  • Medications: Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed.
  • Sclerotherapy: A procedure where a solution is injected into the varicose veins, causing them to close and fade.
  • Laser Treatments: Laser therapy can effectively close off smaller varicose veins and spider veins.
  • Vein Surgery: In more severe cases, procedures such as vein stripping, ligation or endoscopic vein surgery may be necessary.
