Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the lower leg, thigh or pelvis. These clots can cause pain and swelling and, if they travel to the lungs, lead to complications such as pulmonary embolism.

Risk Factors

  • Prolonged periods of immobility, such as long flights or bed rest
  • Certain medical conditions that affect blood clotting
  • Surgery, particularly orthopedic procedures
  • Hormone therapy or birth control pills
  • Pregnancy and the postpartum period
  • Smoking
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Family history of DVT or clotting disorders
  • Age, particularly if over 60, though DVT can occur at any age

Symptoms

Deep vein thrombosis can occur without any noticeable symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Swelling in the affected leg, and occasionally in both legs
  • Pain in the leg, often starting in the calf and feeling like cramping and soreness
  • Red or discolored skin on the leg
  • A feeling of warmth in the affected leg
  • Enlarged veins near the surface of the skin

Diagnostics and Tests

Early detection of DVT is crucial. LifeBridge Health offers the following diagnostic services:

  • Ultrasound: The most common test for diagnosing DVT
  • Blood Tests: Including the D-dimer test, which can indicate the presence of a clot
  • Venography: A special X-ray to visualize blood flow through the veins
  • CT or MRI Scans: Advanced imaging techniques to provide detailed pictures of the veins.

Treatments and Services

Treatment for DVT aims to prevent the clot from growing and to reduce the risk of further clots. LifeBridge Health provides comprehensive treatment options, such as:

  • Anticoagulant Medications: To prevent new clots from forming and existing ones from enlarging
  • Thrombolytics For more serious cases to dissolve clots
  • Compression Stockings: To prevent swelling associated with DVT
  • Filters: Inserted into the vena cava to catch clots before they can travel to the lungs
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Including exercise and dietary changes to improve circulation and overall health
