The Child Abuse Medical Professionals (CHAMP) is a network of medical professionals (doctors and nurses) who are experts in child maltreatment, including child abuse and neglect. They serve as a resource to medical professionals, children’s advocacy centers (CACs), and MDT partners, evaluate suspected maltreatment in children, including abuse and neglect, and provide consultation and training to medical professionals.
Child maltreatment is a common and serious public health concern, resulting in significant morbidity, mortality, and costs. Maryland Health General Article §13-2201-2207 established the Maryland CHAMP Initiative in the Maryland Department of Health. The goal is to train and provide ongoing support, education, and expert consultation in the diagnosis and treatment of child abuse to medical professionals who evaluate children with suspected child maltreatment at CACs, emergency departments, and other locations.
