Meet BridgingLife's New Medical Director: Aaron Charles, .M.D.
Aaron Charles, M.D., became BridgingLife’s new medical director in October 2022.
A Chicago native, Dr. Charles completed his undergraduate studies in ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona before serving in the U.S. Peace Corps as a fisheries extension officer in Tanzania.
When he returned to the United States, he completed his premedical studies and graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine, where he also completed an internship and residency in internal medicine.
Q. How did you become involved in hospice care?
A. After I completed my residency, I came to Baltimore for a fellowship in geriatric medicine and gerontology. It was there that I was introduced and fell in love with
hospice care. I am excited to bring my compassion and nearly 20 years of experience in hospice and palliative care to BridgingLife patients and families to help grow
the use of hospice and palliative care throughout our service area, from Baltimore to Frederick to Pennsylvania and beyond.
Q. What drew you to end-of-life care?
A. This specialty challenges me in all aspects of medicine. Our patients are often extremely frail or ill, and the symptoms can be complex and challenging to manage. When we get them comfortable, it's very satisfying. In addition, working to help guide the patients, their families and loved ones through what can be a frightening and difficult ordeal is rewarding. Lastly, the close interdisciplinary teamwork required to do this job fits my style well.
Q. Is there anything else you'd like us to know?
A. In my free time, I love spending time with my wife, playing board games, hiking and fishing, rooting for the Orioles and playing golf. I have two sons, one teaching Spanish in Seattle and the other attending Emerson College in Boston.
