LifeBridge Health is proud to announce that Laura Green, MD, FACS, vice chair for faculty development and ophthalmologist at Krieger Eye Institute (KEI), has been inducted into the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. Dr. Green is one of two ophthalmologists welcomed to the academy this year and the first ophthalmologist in the nation to be inducted at the member level.

Since joining LifeBridge Health in 2007, Dr. Green has played a pivotal role in shaping the ophthalmology residency program. “When I started, our program was brand new and largely unknown,” Dr. Green recalls. “By prioritizing personalized education, we’ve elevated our reputation and put our program on the map.” Her influence as ophthalmology residency program director from 2010 to 2024 shaped the development of future ophthalmologists, emphasizing both technical skill and compassionate patient care. This dedication earned her the prestigious Straatsma Award for Excellence in Resident Education in 2022, a national recognition of her commitment to surgical education.

Dr. Green’s clinical work at KEI, specializing in cataract surgery and ocular surface disease, is closely tied to her dedication to education. As she continues to refine her own techniques, she uses her insights to mentor and train residents. “As society changes, patient needs change. We need to keep pace,” Dr. Green explains, noting that staying on the cutting edge of clinical care helps her provide the best training for the next generation of surgeons.

In addition to her roles at LifeBridge Health, Dr. Green serves as Chair of the Ophthalmology Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and as a clinical associate professor in ophthalmology at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her leadership extends to national efforts promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in medicine. As a founding member and current chair of the Graduate Medical Education: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Awareness (IDEA) subcommittee at Sinai Hospital, she has been instrumental in fostering a more inclusive environment for both residents and patients.

Dr. Green views her induction into the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators as an opportunity to further advance surgical education, particularly through simulation-based training and collaboration with other medical specialties. “There is so much to be learned through cross-disciplinary conversations,” she says, expressing her enthusiasm for the collaborative work ahead.

With this historic induction, Dr. Laura Green continues her journey as an educator, mentor and leader—always keeping the needs of patients at the forefront of her work and inspiring those around her to push the boundaries of ophthalmology education.
