Mother is checking her daughters' diabetes by monitoring blood glucose level

Learning that your child has an endocrine disorder can bring a mix of emotions and questions. Conditions like diabetes, thyroid imbalances or growth hormone deficiencies often require adjustments, not just in daily routines, but in how you think about your child’s health. From understanding treatments to managing schedules, it’s a lot to take on.

At LifeBridge Health, we provide clarity and support. Our pediatric endocrinology team goes beyond medical care to equip families with the knowledge and tools they need to manage their child’s health with confidence.

Meet Dr. Heinemann: Partnering with Families Through Education

Families navigating a new diagnosis or ongoing care will find an experienced and compassionate partner in Joseph Heinemann, MD, the newest addition to LifeBridge Health’s pediatric endocrinology team. For Dr. Heinemann, pediatric endocrinology is more than a specialty—it’s a calling to make a meaningful impact in children’s lives.

While training at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, he attended a lecture where an adolescent with diabetes shared her journey managing her disease, explaining each aspect of her treatment. “I was amazed that this is medicine where you’re teaching the patient how to manage their disease well enough that they can come back and teach others,” he shares.

This defining moment shaped his approach to care, which emphasizes education and collaboration. “When you teach kids and families why they need to do something, instead of just telling them what to do, you see better adherence, improved outcomes and even advocacy for their own health,” he explains.

Tailored Care Plans Designed for Your Child
Effective care goes beyond treating a diagnosis—it’s about creating a care plan that fits your child’s life. Dr. Heinemann works closely with his team to design personalized plans that address each patient’s physical, emotional and practical needs. Depending on your child’s condition, the plan may include:

  • Nutrition counseling
  • Physical activity recommendations
  • Medication management

Family Support
Dr. Heinemann believes in meeting families where they are. For younger children, he focuses on building healthy habits through positive reinforcement, like creating a “yes” environment at home—stocking the fridge with nutritious snacks and limiting foods that require frequent restrictions.

For teens transitioning to adult care, he plans to establish support groups, providing the tools and confidence they need to manage their conditions independently. “Responsibility is earned,” he notes. “Our job is to find the right balance of guidance and independence.”
