Northwest Hospital Celebrates 60 Years of Service in Baltimore County

Hospital Plans Year-Long Recognition of 1963 Founding

Randallstown, MD- Northwest Hospital this year celebrates 60 years of service in the Randallstown community of Baltimore County - a milestone that will be proudly celebrated all year with team members, patients and the community.

In April 1963, the privately owned Liberty Court Rehabilitation Center became a 93-bed medical/surgical hospital and renamed as Baltimore County General Hospital, later changed to Northwest Hospital in 1993. Five years later, Northwest Hospital joined with Sinai Hospital to create the LifeBridge Health system.

“The history of Northwest Hospital is rooted in serving our neighbors with quality care and friendly, welcoming team members. This reputation stands firm today, 60 years strong! We are so excited to share this anniversary celebration with our team members, our neighbors and our broader community,” says Craig Carmichael, president and chief operating officer of Northwest Hospital.

The anniversary will be celebrated with special observances each month, including team member recognitions and plans for a community health event later in the year. A digital history display in the newly renovated hospital lobby will showcase the hospital’s history, featuring archival photographs and milestones.

Carmichael adds, “We have come a long way in 60 years of service. Today, our hospital is an anchor in the community with 267-beds, all private rooms, including acute, inpatient, psychiatric, subacute and hospice beds and 1,546 team members. We are also extremely proud of our community connections and programs, including the DOVE Program for domestic violence prevention and our partnership in the Baltimore County Public School’s Health Sciences Magnet Program based at Randallstown High and at the Northwest Academy of Health Sciences.”

Northwest Hospital is known for offering minimally invasive surgery, as well as orthopedics and a short-term rehabilitation program, ranked by U.S. News & World Report for four consecutive years. In 2022, Northwest expanded its Behavioral Health Unit to add 12 new inpatient beds and debuted a brand-new, state-of-the-art simulation center focusing on training nurses, physicians and other interdisciplinary services to ensure they are equipped with the skills to provide safe patient care. Carmichael concludes,

“As we celebrate the 60th anniversary, Northwest is more committed than ever to building on the foundation and reputation it has established over the decades. We will continue to recruit and invest in highly skilled and talented clinicians to provide quality care with Every Touch, Every Time. As we recognize our anniversary and reflect on the history of Northwest Hospital, we will also look ahead to the next milestone and how we move forward with a renewed commitment to always be patient-centered and community-focused.”
