General Surgery Residency Evaluations

Evaluations

OPRS/CAMEO

The ACGME mandates that residents be evaluated on their operative and clinical skills. The Operative Performance Rating System (OPRS) is a validated tool to facilitate immediate feedback to residents for many predetermined operations. While the ACGME requires completion of six of these evaluations prior to graduation, we request that our residents fill out one per month starting their intern year in order to receive as much structured feedback as possible.

The Clinical Assessment and Management Plan – Outpatient (CAMEO) is a similarly validated tool to assess the residents’ skills during a clinical encounter. The residents should have their attendings fill one out during each clinic they attend. Completed forms are reviewed immediately with the resident and then turned in to the program coordinator to become part of the official resident file.

MedHub

MedHub is a completely anonymous online evaluation system. Residents receive feedback from attendings at the completion of rotations via this method. Assessment focuses on the six core competencies defined by the ACGME: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice.

Additionally, several times per year the residents will be asked to evaluate each other with respect to teamwork and cooperation. The midlevel providers also assess the residents through MedHub to complete 360 degree evaluation. The system can be accessed by residents at any time so they can track their progress.

Self-Assessments

Prior to their biannual evaluations (see below), the residents are asked to look back and evaluate their performance over the prior six months. It is suggested that they write a synopsis of what they consider their strengths and weaknesses, as well as areas in which they have excelled and those in which they have fallen short. This activity is meant to encourage the residents to recognize that factors outside of the hospital may have an impact on their work performance. It is also the impetus for setting goals for the following six months.

Biannual Evaluations

Every resident meets with the program director or associate program director twice per year. During these meetings, case logs, MedHub evaluations, self-assessments, research accomplishments and prior goals are reviewed.

Deficiencies are noted with a plan for correction. New goals for the following six months are established by the resident in conjunction with the program director.

Program Retreats

Program retreats occur twice per year and involve residents of all levels as well as the program director and program administrator. These sessions are held in an informal location and are designed to identify areas of improvement for the program. This information is then brought back to the official program committee meetings for consideration.
