PGY-1
Interns spend 48 weeks on the Red, Blue, Gold and Northwest services and 4 weeks on specialty services. While on service, interns average 72 work hours per week. The intern is on a Q4 24-hour call schedule. Weekdays begin at 5:30 a.m. and usually end by 5:30 p.m. Interns get one golden weekend per rotation but otherwise work one weekend day.
Off-service (specialty) rotations include anesthesia and urology. While on these specialty rotations, interns do not take call and weekends are off.
PGY-2
PGY-2s spend 26 weeks on the Red, Blue and Gold services and 26 weeks on other rotations. While on service, PGY-2s average 72 hours per week. The resident is on a Q4 24-hour call schedule. PGY-2s get one golden weekend per rotation, but otherwise work one weekend day.
PGY-2s spend 16 weeks in the SICU and take 24-hour call on a Q4-5 schedule. Other PGY-2 rotations include vascular surgery and breast surgery. Vascular surgery does not have a call requirement, but this resident works six days a week. Breast surgery has no call. PGY-2s will also have one month of daytime consult responsibility towards the end of the year.
PGY-3
PGY-3s are on service at Sinai 28 weeks and on outside rotations 24 weeks a year. Senior overnight consult call begins in the PGY-3 year. The call schedule ranges from 12 to 24 hours in duration and averages one to two calls per week. While on service, PGY-3s average 72 hours per week.
Outside rotations include endoscopy, soft tissue at Shock Trauma, transplant surgery at Johns Hopkins and pediatric surgery at University of Maryland. Soft tissue has no call requirement. The transplant resident can expect one call per week. The resident on Endoscopy takes call with the rest of the "on service" senior residents. Pediatric surgery residents take one or two 24 hour calls per week.
PGY-4
PGY-4s are on service for 44 weeks. They spend 16 weeks as the Chief of the service at Northwest Hospital. The call schedule while at Sinai ranges from 12 to 24 hours in duration and averages one to two calls per week. At Northwest, there is no call requirement, however residents work six days per week. While on service, PGY-4s average 72 hours per week.
Other rotations include an elective month and vascular surgery. The resident on the vascular rotation takes call with the other senior residents. The elective month can be done internally or as an outside rotation. External rotations require approval from the program director at least six months in advance.
PGY-5
PGY-5s are on service at Sinai 52 weeks in their final year. This time is split evenly between all three services. The call schedule ranges from 12 to 24 hours in duration and averages one to two calls per week. While on service, PGY-5s average 72 hours per week.
