Chronic Pain/Function Plus!

Sinai Rehabilitation CenterThe Function Plus! Program is an inpatient, pain recovery program offered at Sinai Rehabilitation Center. The program is designed for those with longstanding chronic pain that have failed other treatment approaches, such as medicine and surgery.  The focus is on improving overall quality of life and function, instead of focusing on pain relief.

Individuals in the program learn to take control over the pain and its effects through a highly structured and individualized program.  A multidisciplinary team including a rehabilitation physician, nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, social worker, psychologist, and recreational therapist assist patients to achieve their goals.

The Function Plus! Program includes two eleven-day hospital stays on the inpatient rehabilitation unit separated by a three-day therapeutic leave of absence at home. During the stay, patients are weaned from narcotics, and participate in daily physical and occupational therapy sessions.

Treatments often include learning self-management strategies, performing therapeutic exercises and participating in functional activities of daily living.  Physical agent modalities such as ultrasound, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), hot and cold packs, and Electro Therapeutic Point Stimulation (E.T.P.S.) are popular methods to control pain to increase function.

Completion of the Function Plus! Program leads to overall improvement in quality of life.
