Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program - Teaching Conferences

There are Regularly scheduled educational sessions for the residents that are distributed throughout the week. Some sessions are required and protected for all residents, where others are rotation specific or optional.

For all residents, there is required dedicated didactic time every Friday afternoon, during which alternative service coverage is provided. These sessions cover General Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Subspecialties and relevant Internal Medicine topics. During the Friday afternoon didactic sessions, there are regularly scheduled activities in the Simulation Laboratories.

In addition, residents are required to attend the weekly Grand Rounds lectures. Grand Rounds, includes periodic Mortality and Morbidity (M&M) sessions that are led by the residents under faculty supervision.

Rotation specific required rounds occur on each service. These teaching activities are available for Maternal Fetal Medicine, General Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urogynecology and Oncology. For Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, our residents rotate through the Johns Hopkins Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and they receive extensive didactic experience that is protected for them while they are on those rotations.

Every Wednesday morning, there are lectures on Gynecologic Oncology and Urogynecology, and these precede the Gynecologic Pathology Tumor Board that is attended by those on the Oncology service. Chairman’s Rounds is attended by most residents every Friday morning. Formal Perinatal Rounds occur each week and are attended by the Maternal Fetal Medicine resident as well as the Maternal Fetal Medicine and Neonatology Faculty and Staff.

The Departmental Journal Club occurs monthly and articles are presented by residents with attending physician supervision. The purpose is to critically review evidence based Ob/Gyn literature.

The House Officers Association of Sinai Hospital (HASH) conducts regular teaching sessions for all House Staff in the hospital, and regularly presented lectures include topics such as Ethics, Professionalism, Systems Based Practice, and Interpersonal Communication.

All of the above formal educational activities are complemented by the twice daily patient reports and case discussions that take place on an ongoing basis between the attending physicians, residents and healthcare teams.
