Sinai Department of Mammography

The Sinai Department of Mammography offers complete breast imaging services, including Digital Mammography, Breast Ultrasound and Breast Needle Localization. These services are provided by board-certified radiologists who provide the best treatment possible to patients.

The department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Mammography Quality Standards Act.

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a low dose X-ray procedure that shows the internal tissue of your breast.  It can show areas of the breast that are too small or too deep to be felt by a physical exam.  Mammograms are one of the best tools for early detection of breast cancer.  They should be performed with breast self-exams and regular checkups by your doctor.

What Happens During a Mammogram?

Your mammogram will be performed by an X-ray technologist specializing in mammography.  This specially trained technologist works under close supervision of the radiologist to assure proper results from your examination.

The technologist will position your breast one side at a time on an image plate. The breast will be pressed against the plate.  This may cause some minor discomfort, but is not harmful in any way. Sinai Hospital offers every patient a free MammoPad®, an FDA approved soft, foam pad that helps minimize discomfort during the mammogram screening.

The mammogram screening will take about 30 minutes.

When Will I Get the Results of a Mammogram?

The radiologist will study your mammogram and the results will be sent to your doctor.  You will also receive a letter explaining your findings.  You should receive this letter within two weeks.
