At Sinai Hospital, we are equipped with a Simulation Lab that enables residents to gain more experience in laparoscopy, obstetrical operative deliveries, and team drills which includes our nursing staff. We have a Stryker Laparoscopic tower that enables the residents to practice both basic and advanced skills. The residents are able to practice the 5 skills that are essential to passing the FLS (Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery) certification, which includes peg transfer, pattern cutting, ligation of vessels, and intracorporeal and extracorporeal knot tying. This program is part of a general surgery residency, however, we feel that these skills are important and can be implemented in an OB/GYN residency program to improve gynecological laparoscopy.
Also, we have a NOELLE model that we can utilize in assisting with obstetrical emergencies such as shoulder dystocia, fetal bradycardia with operative delivery, and post-partum hemorrhage. We have the capability to videotape team building drills which includes our nursing staff, pediatrics, and anesthesia in order to debrief in a constructive method. In addition, we have a hemi-pelvis which allows residents to practice position, station, and operative deliveries.
