Residents are trained in the full range of medical and surgical Gynecology for all age groups. This training includes the development of the knowledge and competence for medical management as well as the surgical skills that are necessary to perform contemporary and traditional surgical procedures. Over 2,500 Gynecological operations are performed annually at Sinai Hospital, and this is supplemented by the surgical experience on the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility rotation at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. In addition to the skill development for managing benign gynecological operations, focused attention is directed at having competence for the management of urinary stress incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction. The training is provided by generalists from both the full-time faculty as well as voluntary faculty engaged in private practice. In addition, subspecialists provide a broad exposure to advanced operative laparoscopy that includes robotic surgery. Ambulatory Surgery procedures include Hysteroscopy, Endometrial Ablation and other relevant procedures and techniques. An effective addition to the Gynecological experience is an Ambulatory Gynecology rotation to the private practice offices of faculty and private practitioners. This engages the residents in real life private practice and day-to-day outpatient experience.
Included in this rotation, are dedicated rotations to a specialized Breast Center and a Planned Parenthood Center. The Breast Center provided training and experience in the assessment and management of the full-range of breast diseases. The Planned Parenthood rotation provides residents with both an understanding and instruction in Family Planning techniques and counseling, as well as experience in the procedures performed at this site. This opportunity is utilized at the discretion of the resident.
A major addition to the program has been a Simulation training experience in both Gynecology and Obstetrics. The Gynecology Simulation training takes place at a sophisticated off-campus site at the University of Maryland as well as the Departmental Simulation Laboratory. Training includes simple exercises in the performance of complex procedures.
Practice Based Learning and Improvement in Gynecology is enhanced by the residents’ participation in the Gyn M&M sessions that are conducted during Grand Rounds on the four occasions during the academic year.
