The traumatic brain injury (TBI) and neurorehabilitation programs of The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute offer comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for those with neurologic or orthopedic diseases.
The Brain & Spine Institute provides the full spectrum of rehabilitation services—from intensive inpatient rehabilitation for those who are recovering from brain injury, to regular outpatient treatment for those recovering from stroke.
No matter the diagnosis, our goal is to restore physical and cognitive function to the maximum level, to address the psychological effects of impairments and disabilities, and to enable patients to quickly return to their daily activities.

Our inpatient Traumatic Brain Injury Unit at Sinai Hospital is one of only three accredited inpatient units in the state. The unit is designed to improve the quality of life, to enhance self-care, to educate patients and families, and to prepare patients for transition to home and/or continued rehabilitation. The multidisciplinary team includes physicians, rehabilitative nurses, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, neuropsychologists, social workers and physical therapists. Regardless of the diagnosis, the treatment team provides individualized and group treatment to improve communication, cognition, swallowing, functional activities of daily living, and physical abilities.
The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute is the only regional option for a comprehensive integrated inpatient and outpatient program dedicated to improving outcomes in patients with diseases of the nervous system and spine. The institute's specialists, who work in interdisciplinary teams, include those with expertise in neurology, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, orthopedics, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), emergency medicine, pain management sleep disorders, neuropsychiatry, neuro-oncology, radiation oncology, and neuro-opthalmology.
The neurologic disorders treated at the institute include dementia, headaches, brain injuries and tumors, epilepsy, back and spine pain, normal pressure hydrocephalus, spasticity and disorders of muscle tone, scoliosis, spinal cord injuries and tumors, and stroke.
